Palestinian Hip Hop Film & Live Performance ( + Q&A with Anna Baltzer--bio below)
I'm excited to announce a screening of "Slingshot Hip Hop" followed by Q&A with me and a live performance by local Palestinian hip-hop artists "Bird" & "Sharif the Truth" (bios below)! This film is perhaps the best movie on Palestine I have ever seen (and I've seen a lot!) -- "like a ground-zero tour of the Israeli-Palestine conflict with young Arab rappers as our guides. Spitting lyrics instead of throwing rocks ... it's profoundly uplifting when politico hip-hop can once again transcend borders, from the West Bank to Tel Aviv, even though the rappers themselves can't." The movie focuses on the hip hop ground DAM and others that have built an incredible movement of nonviolent resistance through spoken word. Local performers: Bird (b. Shadi Abdelaziz) and Sharif the Truth (b. Sharif Ead) are first generation Palestinian-American Hip-Hop artists. Born and raised in the U.S., they lived in the West Bank from 1995-1998 & 1993-1998, respectively, where they lived under Israeli occupation. This theme is heard throughout their music & with it, they hope to inspire & educate people about the Palestinian struggle. For the past 4 years, Bird & Sharif have performed at numerous shows around the Midwest, which have included Gaza fundraisers and other beneficiary shows.
